About Us
Technology and the internet is still a new concept. In the 90’s and early 2000’s, all the IT needs of a business could be accomplished by a single team. But as global devices are more interconnected, two separate disciplines are emerging. One is still the traditional system administration (aka. making the technology work) and the other is making it function securely. This can no longer be done by a single team because they have competing objectives. System administration is primarily interested in functionality and up time whereas security is focused on boundaries, keeping the information confidential and auditing. Neither extreme can be fully embraced. If companies hastily adopt solutions, they’re typically insecure. But if companies allow solutions to be locked down tightly, they’re often unavailable or impractical. These two teams have to find a balance as they explore the confidentiality, integrity, and availability triad (CIA Triad).
This is where Cyber Samurai comes in.
Having spent over a decade in system administration, we fully understand the first part of this issue (making technology work and deadlines). But unlike the typical system administration team, we can objectively focus on the second piece of the issue. We go beyond simply making technology work and investigate additional aspects such as ensuring encryption is used at each step, testing how the solution can be abused, and making sure least privilege is satisfied. By helping businesses avoid hasty, insecure solutions, we can help companies avoid costly pitfalls like carelessly deploying Internet of Things devices on production networks and suffering the embarrassment of losing casinos customer data through a fish tank sensor.
But this new balance requires more than a simple penetration test. The problem is too complicated to be solved by a one-day engagement and a security report that is just a snapshot of the vulnerabilities known on the network that day. This requires ongoing creative thinking, good communication, testing, a familiarity with the people and the network.
This is not a penetration test. This is a relationship.
This technical battlefield forged Cyber Samurai. We saw a deep business need that the typical IT Operations teams and penetration tests can’t meet. Security is truly a different train of thought. But this is where humility comes in. The Japanese word “samurai” when literally translated bears the meaning of servant, to wait upon, or assistant to nobility. Security professionals may become arrogant in their specialized skills, but this is not the way of the samurai. They provided their sharpened skills through the heart of a servant.
This is Cyber Samurai.
About the Owner:
Brian Wortley has been fascinated by computers since his dad brought home their first Tandy computer in the 80’s. Growing up on a steady diet of primitive video games, he got a taste of command line troubleshooting and trying to hide the excessive 10mb game file directory from his father. He has built and tinkered with his own computers and spent many hours troubleshooting the problems that ensued.
In his early twenties, he worked for a managed service provider in Colorado Springs and had the privilege of helping many small businesses with their IT needs. Brian has worked for a few nonprofit companies in town and got a taste for standardization and security. Wanting to get into security full time, he began working as an Information System Security Officer at Lockheed Martin. Seeing how the government and military ran their networks, Brian realized businesses in Colorado Springs needed a scaled-down version of this security. Cyber Samurai and the practical method of The Way of the Samurai is the product of years of hands-on system admin experience, undergoing security audits for industry and government compliance, and his own security research. He’s honored to bring this approach to businesses who need it.
